Gay-Straight Alliance sponsors diversity dance

By Kari Toland

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at UW-Fox will host its first student dance in Baehman Theatre on Dec. 16, from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The dance is open to colleges and universities in the Fox Valley and surrounding areas.

GSA invited numerous campuses such as UW-Oshkosh, Fox Valley Technical College, Lakeland College and UW Colleges students.

UW-Green Bay’s GSA will provide the DJ for the dance.

The mission of GSA is to ensure an open and welcoming environment for all students.

“Being a smaller campus everyone interacts with each other and everyone needs a support system. It doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight. We want to open our group up to everybody,” Pam Massey, athletic director and GSA club advisor, said.

UW-Fox’s GSA also aims to educate campus and the community on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues.

The organization provides a safe haven for LGBT students and their allies to network and support each other.

“This is a place to be who you are, when you might not necessarily feel comfortable in public. It’s a great place to meet new people,” a GSA club member said.

“The idea of having a place to be accepted if you are not getting that acceptance elsewhere is amazing,” freshman Sarah Szabo said.

GSA also works on planning campus events and ways to recruit new members.

“Free food would be a great way to attract people to the meetings,” Szabo said.

The number of GSA members has fluctuated in the past, but is steadily growing.
