Torbjörn Lahti, international urban planner and pioneer of the worldwide eco-municipality movement, will present at the upcoming Sustainability Networking Fair at UWFox on April 28, 2014.
His forum, entitled A Journey of Sustainability: Learn Proven Strategies for Moving the Fox Valley Forward, is intended to provide a springboard for Fox Valley groups, communities and citizens to take their sustainability efforts to the next level. A Sustainability Networking Fair will preceded Lahti’s presentation, featuring displays by area sustainability boards, nonprofits and students.
Lahti is trained as an urban planner, and over the past 30 years has provided education and consulting in the eco-municipality systems approach to sustainable development, including the Fox Valley and a number of other communities across Wisconsin. For Lahti, the upcoming Wisconsin trip is more than just a presentation and book release visit.
“It feels like going home again,” said Lahti. “It will be wonderful to hear and share stories about our mutual community building experiences, and continuing our learning together.”
Beyond reviewing his soon-to-be-released book, My Journey with the Eco-municipalities: How to Change the World through Local Action, Lahti is eager to share the new insights of eco-municipality 5.0, which provides a step-by-step framework for accelerating and re-invigorating sustainable community endeavors across public, private, educational, non-profit and volunteer sectors. He’s equally enthusiastic about touring the local community, and exploring ways the eco-municipality model may be harmonized with other local social and economic development approaches of interest to the community.
Both Lahti’s presentation and the Sustainability Networking Fair are free to attend; the fair starts at 6 p.m. followed by Lahti at 7 p.m. Both events are co-sponsored by the Fox Valley Sustainable Communities Network, Fox Cities Greenways, Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, UW Extension, UWFox, Lawrence University, East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance, Wisconsin Chapter of American Planning Association and SCA Tissue North America.
